Imaging procedures in medicine are the product of different scientific sub-disciplines. Numerous interactive experiments on the subject of optics and machine learning are used to present the basics of these sub-disciplines and their application.

The Department of Medical Engineering and Biotechnology combines innovative technologies and biological systems to improve healthcare. Interdisciplinary collaboration results in new solutions that improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. From the development of biocompatible materials to advanced imaging techniques and the use of artificial intelligence - our research at the department is shaping the future of medicine and biotechnology.

Experience the fascinating world of biophotonics and medical technology up close! The Biophotonics Instrumentation Group invites you to an exciting hands-on experience and a guided tour of the lab.

Our event is aimed at all age groups and offers you a thematic introduction to medical technology research. You can look forward to a varied program that will amaze you and encourage you to join in.

Highlights of the event:

Projection of hand-drawn sketches through a MEMS system:

Experience the impressive technology of micromirror systems (MEMS) in action. Hand-painted sketches are projected through this technology in an innovative way, allowing you to experience the precision and flexibility of MEMS technology first hand. This projection demonstrates the versatile applications of micromirrors in biophotonics and beyond.

Matchbox game to illustrate artificial intelligence:

Learn the basics of machine learning in a fun way. Our matchbox game illustrates how the world's simplest AI learns and evolves through simple rules and interactions. It offers an entertaining and understandable introduction to the complex world of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Presentation of the basics of color theory:

Immerse yourself in the world of color and discover the fascinating basics of color theory. Learn how colors are created, the role of light and how colors are used in different applications. This presentation will deepen your understanding of the importance of color and light.

Hyperspectral Imaging:

See how hyperspectral imaging works and the fascinating insights it offers. Using gummy bears, we will demonstrate the different spectral bands and how this technology is used in medical technology to detect subtle differences in materials and tissues. This method opens up new horizons in imaging and diagnostics.

Hands-on physics experiments on light refraction:

Become a researcher yourself and carry out small experiments on the refraction of light. Discover how light is refracted in different media and the exciting optical phenomena that result. These hands-on experiments offer an interactive opportunity to explore the basics of optics.

In addition, we will show you two impressive system applications as examples of practical research:

Volumetric (3D) imaging by optical coherence tomography of blood vessels:

Be fascinated by three-dimensional images of blood vessels created by optical coherence tomography (OCT). This technique enables detailed insights into the structure of blood vessels and the identification of plaques, providing important information for medical diagnostics.

3D printer in action:

Watch live how a 3D printer works and builds complex structures layer by layer. Find out more about the possible applications of 3D printing in medical technology, from the production of individual implants to biocompatible materials.

Come along and be inspired by the world of biophotonics - our speakers are always available to share their expertise with you. Take this opportunity to gain an exciting insight into medical technology and biotechnology and to become active yourself. Our event offers not only scientific knowledge, but also plenty of fun and inspiration for young and old. We look forward to welcoming you and to an inspiring day full of discoveries and aha-experiences!
