Amazing, surprising and curious facts about the arduous journey from medical data to knowledge. And what do the yellow inhabitants of Springfield actually have to do with it?

Data does not lie - it is innocent! Only their selection, classification and interpretation give rise to knowledge or errors, which are ultimately used to justify decisions and actions. This connection holds great responsibility for practicing scientists - especially for us at the Institute of Medical Statistics, Informatics and Data Science.

So follow us into the wondrous world of data! We will demonstrate known pitfalls and approaches to solving them using concrete examples. We have prepared topics for this and present them interactively. Transparent minicomputers, our own software and visualizations support us in this.

At our stand, we will focus in particular on these three questions and phenomena:

  • Why is data not anonymous?
  • Why are controlled studies essential (...and what does Simpson say about them)?
  • And how do you recognize the failure of established models?

We cordially invite you to participate and discuss. We will use interactive technology to make the topic accessible. No prior knowledge is necessary, all we need is your interest. You can look forward to data and technology you can touch and hopefully gain new insights. You will certainly look at some media reports with different eyes after visiting us.

We also offer the following at our stand:

  • The local Data Integration Center (DIZ) will introduce itself. The staff will show examples of how they are helping to make medical data available and usable for research at the Jena site.
  • We report on the work of the Medical Informatics Initiative and the SMITH consortium.
  • We offer an opportunity to learn how computers and algorithms work in a fun way. This point in particular is also suitable for younger guests.
  • We have rubber animals, bubbles and merch!
