Materials testers examine the quality of components and joints such as weld seams.

It is their responsibility to decide whether certain production processes and materials are suitable for manufacturing stable bridge piers , for example . Various test methods are used to determine the different properties of a material. Components can be X-rayed to make their interior visible, samples are examined for their chemical composition using various methods and in destructive tests, for example, weld seams are stressed until they fail to check their strength.

During the Long Night of Science, you and your children can take on the tasks of a materials tester and get to know the individual tasks and test methods. We will provide you with various material samples that you can test yourself using different methods to see whether they have the required quality.
