If an organ fails completely, a transplant is often the last resort. We provide comprehensive information on the subject of organ donation.

Around 10,000 seriously ill people in Germany are waiting for a donor organ. The University Hospital is one of 45 centers nationwide where life-saving transplant operations can be carried out - if there is a suitable organ. During the Long Night of Science, we want to answer the most important questions about organ donation and transplantation medicine in short presentations:

  • How is it ensured that an organ is only removed after the "irreversible loss of all brain functions"?
Find out how an interdisciplinary medical team determines brain death
  • How does the donor organ get to the recipient?
Find out how the German Organ Transplantation Foundation coordinates organ donation in Germany
  • How does the transplantation process work?
Find out how surgical teams transplant hearts or livers in hour-long operations
  • How healthy are the recipients after the operation?
Find out more about medical aftercare and life with a donor organ

After the presentations, the speakers will be available for individual discussions and questions.
