Welding, melting, soldering, lasering, gluing - at ifw Jena, everything revolves around joining things together. Children and adults can get hands-on during the Long Night of Science.

Hands-on research - that's what the Long Night of Science at ifw Jena is all about. On this evening, children and adults can get to know the work of the research institute and try their hand at the individual fields of activity. We provide insights into welding, lasering and 3D printing with plastic and metal, into our materials testing laboratory and into bonding techniques. You can carry out all the experiments yourself and take the results home with you - as a souvenir of your research that night.

You and your children will use the laser to cut out your own Christmas decorations and then join them together using innovative welding and gluing methods. You can try out your welding skills on the hand welding laser and learn about innovative diffusion bonding in our furnaces.

In the materials testing laboratory, you will test what a basketball can withstand. You and your children can then take surprise eggs home with you - after you have selected a suitable one using X-ray testing. And are you sure that your jewelry is really real gold? You can find out for yourself with EDX analysis! And have you ever tried to build a laser at home? We'll show you what you need.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Long Night of Science at ifw Jena on Ernst-Ruska-Ring in Göschwitz!

The Günter Köhler Institute for Joining Technology and Materials Testing (ifw Jena) is a business-oriented research institute in Jena. The institute has been a partner for regional and international companies, universities and research institutes for 25 years. The work of ifw Jena focuses in particular on research projects and services for laser material processing, additive manufacturing processes, furnace-based processes with a focus on diffusion bonding, bonding for high-temperature applications and high-performance welding processes. As a non-profit institution, ifw Jena is primarily involved in publicly funded research projects in the pre-competitive field.
In addition, ifw Jena is also a provider of various accredited procedures for materials testing and materials and joint characterization. The ifw Jena also offers extensive welding technology training courses.
