ELLIS is a pan-European network of excellent AI research that uses machine learning as the engine of modern AI. The aim is to secure Europe's leading international role in AI.

ELLIS is a pan-European network of excellence in AI research. It builds on machine learning as the engine of modern AI and strives to ensure the enduring international leadership of AI "Made in Europe" by connecting top researchers in the field and creating a multi-center AI research lab. The members of ELLIS are committed to shaping the future of AI in Europe by pushing the scientific and technological boundaries for human-centered, useful and safe AI.

The goal of the ELLIS Unit Jena is to combine fundamental developments in machine learning with challenges related to spatio-temporal environmental and climate dynamics to better understand the Earth system and its components. An important aspect here is the integration of knowledge into machine learning methods as suitable assumptions - this can be qualitative knowledge about causal relationships ("causal modeling") or quantitative knowledge about functional relationships that can be cast in physical, chemical, biological or geo-ecological formulas ("hybrid modeling").
