Glass is a very special material that is an integral part of our daily lives. From the first glass of juice at the breakfast table, to looking out of the window to assess the weather, to looking at your cell phone - glass is always there. Research is pursuing many approaches to improve the properties of glass for specific applications. Examples of this include improving transparency, strength or chemical resistance. It all starts with the production of a glass of a certain composition. We will therefore demonstrate glass production in a small furnace. Glasses are now even used in medicine as implant materials. However, these are supposed to react with body fluids and dissolve completely in due course. Accordingly, we are investigating the solubility behavior of glasses under various conditions and will demonstrate experiments on this.
